The Apollo-R is a CD player that succeeds the original Apollo of 2005. It uses Rega's own software and control system, and the analogue, digital and control sections have been redeveloped. The PCB layout has been tightened, and the discrete output amplifier has been tuned to bring typical THD down from 0.005% to 0.0025%.
Digital conversion is handled by a Wolfson WM8742 converter, the same chip used in the Rega DAC-R. The supplies feeding the CD processor, optical block, laser diode amplifier and slicer are the low-noise designs used in the Isis CD player. A dedicated display microprocessor reduces the load on the main control processors, and disc initialisation is as fast as on the Isis.
The player is top loading and sits in a compact aluminium case that matches the DAC-R and Brio-R. It has both analogue and digital outputs, so it can work with an amplifier directly or act as a CD transport-style front end for the DAC-R. A dedicated CD remote is supplied and also operates Rega amplifier functions.
